Love goes backwards. Power changes hands. The past wants answers. And Scorpio opens the basement.

Some months arrive politely.

October 2026 does not.

It walks through the door dressed in Scorpio, carrying somebody else's secrets, a bank statement, an old love letter and several questions about who exactly has been controlling the situation this entire time.

And that is before Mercury turns retrograde.

October is one of those months when the astrology seems to develop its own atmosphere. The skies are crowded with retrogrades, fixed-sign confrontations and questions of power, ownership, desire, technology and resources. Venus spends most of the month retracing her steps through Scorpio before returning to Libra. Mercury enters his own retrograde in Scorpio. Pluto finally turns direct in Aquarius. Mars travels through Leo. The lunar nodes continue their journey across Aquarius and Leo. And Scorpio season begins just as the month reaches its most psychologically interesting point.

This is not necessarily a month of straightforward answers.

It is a month of excavation.

What do you want? What does it cost? Who has the power? Who has the information? What belongs to you? What are you sharing? What are you hiding? And perhaps most importantly: what have you become so attached to that it quietly started owning you?

OCTOBER 1–4: WELL, THAT ESCALATED QUICKLY

October barely makes it through its first cup of coffee before the temperature rises.

Mercury has just entered Scorpio, where communication becomes investigative, strategic and considerably less interested in small talk. As October begins, Mercury squares Mars in Leo and then Pluto in Aquarius, while Mars simultaneously approaches its opposition to Pluto. Mars also forms a trine to retrograde Neptune in Aries.

This creates an extraordinary opening atmosphere.

Mercury in Scorpio wants information. Not the press release. Not the official version. The information underneath the information.

Mars in Leo wants action, visibility and authority.

Pluto in Aquarius is busy transforming the systems themselves.

Personally, this can manifest as arguments, revelations, strategic conversations and power struggles. Someone wants an answer. Someone else wants control. Somebody knows more than they're saying. And somebody, somewhere, is preparing an extremely long message that should probably remain in Drafts until morning.

Collectively, the symbolism becomes considerably larger.

Mars–Pluto combinations have long been associated astrologically with force, power and confrontation. With Pluto now travelling through Aquarius, the confrontation belongs to a much larger historical story involving technology, networks, institutions, AI, robotics and the transformation of collective systems.

Leo versus Aquarius also echoes the nodal axis running through these signs: individual authority versus collective structures, the leader versus the network, personal recognition versus technological and social evolution.

In mundane astrology, this is a useful window to watch disputes around political power, technological infrastructure, energy and resources. Crude oil and other strategic resources fit naturally into the broader Scorpio–Pluto symbolism of extraction, underground wealth, concentrated resources and control — but astrology cannot establish that a particular geopolitical event will occur. Think of this as an archetypal lens rather than a geopolitical weather machine.

Then October 3 adds another storyline entirely.

Venus stations retrograde at 8°30′ Scorpio. She will remain retrograde until November 13, eventually backing out of Scorpio and into Libra. Her full shadow cycle stretches from August 31 until December 15.

And suddenly October is not merely asking who has power.

It is asking what we value.

Love. Money. Beauty. Desire. Sex. Self-worth. Intimacy. Dependency. Possession. Agreements. Attraction. The things we want and the prices we are prepared to pay for them.

Venus retrograde in Scorpio does not particularly care whether something looks good from the outside.

She wants to know what is happening underneath.

On October 4, the Sun in Libra opposes retrograde Saturn in Aries, adding another confrontation between diplomacy and unilateral action, cooperation and boundaries, compromise and authority.

Libra says, “Surely we can negotiate.”

Aries says, “We have negotiated.”

Welcome to October.

That escalated quickly.

VENUS RETROGRADE: LOVE, MONEY AND THE THINGS WE PRETEND WE DON'T WANT

Venus retrograde deserves its own chapter because she is arguably the leading lady of October.

She stations retrograde in Scorpio on October 3 at 8°30′ and returns to Libra on October 25. She does not station direct until November 13 at 22°52′ Libra.

This is much bigger than the internet's favorite Venus-retrograde cliché:

Your ex is coming back.

Maybe.

But your credit-card statement might come back too.

So might an old insecurity. An unfinished financial decision. A question about beauty. A creative project. A friendship. A contract. A sexual pattern. An imbalance in a relationship. Or the uncomfortable realization that what you once desperately wanted no longer resembles what you value today.

Venus retrograde is a review of value.

In Scorpio, that review becomes intimate. Scorpio rules what is merged, exchanged and shared: trust, intimacy, psychological bonds and, in mundane astrology, themes around shared wealth, debt, taxation and concentrated resources.

It is therefore also an interesting period for watching cultural conversations around women, femininity, beauty standards, sexuality and the commercial use of women's bodies and images. Advertising, fashion, cinema and celebrity culture can become useful mirrors for changing Venusian values.

What do we call beautiful?

What do we call desirable?

What do we permit women to show?

What do we punish them for showing?

And who makes money from the answer?

Venus retrograde can make culture look into its own mirror.

Sometimes the lighting is unforgiving.

OCTOBER 5–11: LOVE GOES BACKWARDS AND EVERYBODY HAS SOMETHING TO SAY

By October 7, Mercury meets retrograde Venus around 8° Scorpio.

Now the Venus retrograde acquires a voice.

Old conversations can reopen. Unspoken feelings can become considerably more spoken. Money discussions return. Agreements require revision. Attraction acquires vocabulary.

And because this conjunction happens in Scorpio, “We don't need to talk about it” may cease to be a viable strategy.

Mercury in Scorpio asks the question everyone hoped would remain politely unasked.

Meanwhile, Mars in Leo sextiles retrograde Uranus in Gemini.

This is a very different kind of energy: inventive, fast, experimental. Uranus disrupts; Mars acts. If the existing method isn't working, try something different. Technology, communications and unconventional solutions can benefit from this combination.

Around October 9, Jupiter in Leo connects harmoniously with Vesta in Aries, giving another layer to the week's fire symbolism. Vesta is devotion: what receives the sacred flame, what we maintain, what deserves concentrated attention. Jupiter expands whatever it touches.

The question becomes simple:

What deserves your fire?

Not what can hold your attention for fourteen minutes.

What deserves devotion?

And then we reach October 10.

THE LIBRA NEW MOON: CAN WE PLEASE DISCUSS THE RELATIONSHIP?

The New Moon occurs at 17°22′ Libra on October 10. The lunation chart places Mercury at 12° Scorpio, retrograde Venus around 7° Scorpio, Mars around 7° Leo, Jupiter at 21° Leo, Saturn at 10° Aries, Uranus at 5° Gemini, Neptune at 2° Aries, Pluto at 3° Aquarius and the North Node around 28° Aquarius. Most importantly, Venus and Mars form an extremely tight square in the lunation chart.

And that changes everything.

A Libra New Moon ordinarily wants a new chapter in cooperation, relationships, diplomacy, equality and negotiation.

Beautiful.

Except the ruler of this New Moon — Venus — is retrograde in Scorpio and squaring Mars in Leo.

So perhaps this isn't:

“Let's start fresh.”

Perhaps it is:

“Before we start fresh, could we discuss the seventeen things we've been pretending are fine?”

Venus in Scorpio wants emotional honesty.

Mars in Leo wants desire expressed.

Libra wants fairness.

Put them together and attraction and irritation can become remarkably close relatives.

This can be an excellent New Moon for asking what equality actually means in a relationship. Who initiates? Who compromises? Who pays? Who cares? Who performs the invisible emotional labor? Who gets attention? Who gets heard?

The New Moon isn't necessarily promising perfect harmony.

It may be asking us to create a more honest version of it.

OCTOBER 12–18: THE ADULTS HAVE ENTERED THE ROOM

And then something rather shocking happens.

The astrology becomes useful.

Around October 13–14, the Sun in Libra interacts with Ceres in Cancer and opposes Vesta in Aries, bringing questions of care, responsibility and devotion to the foreground.

Who needs your energy?

What deserves it?

Those are not necessarily the same thing.

Juno in late Capricorn also squares retrograde Chiron in late Aries around this period. Juno speaks astrologically to commitment and partnership; Chiron has recently returned to Aries, reopening themes around identity, autonomy, courage and the right to exist as oneself.

The relationship question becomes:

Can I commit without abandoning myself?

It is particularly appropriate during Venus retrograde, because October repeatedly examines the line between intimacy and self-erasure.

Then the sky becomes noticeably more constructive.

The Sun in Libra sextiles Jupiter in Leo around October 15. Confidence expands. Opportunities become easier to see. The atmosphere gains some oxygen.

At roughly the same time, the Moon's movement through Sagittarius temporarily activates the fire planets, while Mars in Leo approaches a trine to Saturn in Aries.

Mars says:

“Let's do it.”

Saturn says:

“Fine. Show me the plan.”

Finally. Adult supervision.

Mars–Saturn in harmonious aspect can be excellent symbolism for disciplined action, endurance and putting energy into structures capable of lasting longer than an Instagram Story.

And then Pluto moves.

PLUTO DIRECT IN AQUARIUS: THE FUTURE RESUMES

Pluto stations direct at 3°04′ Aquarius late on October 15 in Eastern Time, which places the station on October 16 in Poland. Pluto has been retrograde since May 6.

This is one of October's major structural moments.

Pluto in Aquarius is a generational transit, so its story is vastly larger than a single month. It belongs to the transformation of technology, networks, collective structures, institutions and the distribution of power.

AI.

Robotics.

Data.

Digital communities.

Automation.

Networks.

Systems that reorganize how people work, communicate, govern, produce and exchange information.

At the beginning of October, Mars opposed Pluto.

Now Pluto turns forward.

Symbolically, the confrontation begins giving way to movement.

The future has finished reviewing its notes.

Back to work.

And all of this takes place while the North Node continues through Aquarius and the South Node through Leo.

That axis deserves to remain in the background of our October story.

Leo asks: Who is the star?

Aquarius asks: What is the system?

Leo asks: Who leads?

Aquarius asks: How does the network function?

Leo wants recognition.

Aquarius wants architecture for the future.

Neither sign is inherently “better”; the nodal symbolism simply gives October another way of examining the tension between individual authority and collective evolution.

OCTOBER 19–25: SCORPIO OPENS THE BASEMENT

Now we get to the part October has clearly been waiting for.

On October 20, retrograde Venus in Scorpio squares Pluto in Aquarius again.

Again is the important word.

Venus already encountered Pluto during her direct journey in September. Now she returns to the same territory retrograde.

Remember what was happening around the middle of September?

Venus remembers.

A relationship story may return. A financial issue may resurface. Questions around jealousy, control, obsession, desire or self-worth can demand another look.

Apparently deleting the message did not delete the lesson.

Venus–Pluto symbolism is rarely casual.

It asks a brutal but useful question:

What do you want so badly that it has acquired power over you?

Meanwhile, the late-Libra Sun opposes retrograde Chiron in Aries, revisiting the month's recurring tension between relationship and identity.

How much compromise is healthy?

When does compromise become disappearance?

How much of yourself have you negotiated away simply because keeping the peace seemed easier?

Then, on October 23, the Sun enters Scorpio. Juno also enters Aquarius around this date, adding another interesting shift in the symbolism of commitment and partnership.

Scorpio season begins.

And the basement opens.

OCTOBER 24: VENUS CAZIMI — THE HEART OF THE STORY

October 24 deserves a circle around it.

A very large one.

Retrograde Venus meets the Sun in early Scorpio in the Venus cazimi, the inferior conjunction that marks the heart and midpoint of the Venus retrograde cycle.

After weeks of reconsidering love, money, attraction, beauty, values, self-worth and desire, something can become illuminated.

Not necessarily resolved.

Illuminated.

There is a difference.

Maybe you finally understand why you want someone.

Maybe you understand why you no longer do.

Maybe a financial priority changes.

Maybe your idea of beauty changes.

Maybe you realize that wanting something intensely does not necessarily mean it belongs in your life.

That distinction is extremely Scorpio.

Scorpio is not afraid of desire.

It simply wants to know what desire is doing to you.

And because October apparently considers one major retrograde insufficient entertainment, Mercury stations retrograde at 20°59′ Scorpio on October 24. It will remain retrograde until November 13.

Now Venus is reviewing what we value while Mercury reviews what we know.

Love and communication.

Money and contracts.

Intimacy and information.

Trust and secrets.

Desire and disclosure.

Mercury retrograde in Scorpio doesn't merely ask:

“What happened?”

It asks:

“What really happened?”

And suddenly the basement needs another flashlight.

VENUS RETURNS TO LIBRA: IS IT ACTUALLY FAIR?

On October 25, retrograde Venus leaves Scorpio and returns to Libra. She remains retrograde there until November 13.

The investigation changes tone.

Scorpio asked:

What is really happening underneath this relationship?

Libra asks:

Is it fair?

Who gives more?

Who compromises more?

Who carries the emotional load?

Who decides?

Who apologizes?

Who pays?

Who waits?

Who has been calling something “balance” simply because nobody wanted to have the argument?

Venus is powerful in Libra, the sign she traditionally rules, but retrograde motion makes this a period of reconsideration rather than simple forward movement.

The scales are being recalibrated.

OCTOBER 26: THE TAURUS FULL MOON — WHAT OWNS YOU?

And then comes the Full Moon.

On October 26, the Moon reaches 2°46′ Taurus, opposite the Sun at 2°46′ Scorpio.

Pluto sits at 3°06′ Aquarius.

That means the Sun–Moon opposition is simultaneously locked into an extremely tight square with Pluto. The lunation chart also places retrograde Venus at 29°31′ Libra, Mercury at 20°44′ Scorpio, Mars at 15°38′ Leo and the North Node around 27°39′ Aquarius.

This is not the fluffy Taurus Full Moon about candles and expensive blankets.

Although Taurus would certainly like both.

This Full Moon asks:

What do you own — and what owns you?

Taurus rules the tangible: money, property, land, food, possessions, resources, security and material value.

Scorpio governs what becomes shared, hidden, entangled or extracted: debt, taxation, inheritance, intimacy, collective resources and financial interdependence.

Pluto adds power.

So the Full Moon illuminates the relationship between value and control.

Personally, that can be remarkably intimate.

What makes you feel secure?

What are you afraid to lose?

What relationship has become a possession?

What possession has become an identity?

What financial arrangement gives someone else power over you?

What do you keep because you genuinely value it — and what do you keep because letting go terrifies you?

Collectively, the symbolism naturally invites attention to money, financial systems, strategic resources, trade, ownership, extraction and energy.

This is where the symbolism of oil becomes especially interesting. Scorpio and Pluto are traditionally associated in modern mundane astrology with hidden or underground resources and concentrated power; Taurus speaks to material resources and value. In a world where energy supplies, crude oil, trade routes and resource control can become instruments of geopolitical influence, the symbolism is striking.

But symbolism is not causation, and astrology cannot responsibly tell us that a specific conflict over Iran, the Gulf or oil will occur because of this Full Moon. What it can do is give us a thematic framework for watching how questions of resources, ownership, diplomacy and power are developing in the real world.

And notice who rules this Taurus Full Moon.

Venus.

Retrograde.

At the final degree of Libra.

The planet of value is reconsidering value while the Full Moon asks what everything is worth.

Subtle, October is not.

OCTOBER 27–31: ONE LAST ARGUMENT BEFORE HALLOWEEN

Around October 27, the Scorpio Sun sextiles Lilith in Capricorn, adding another undertone of authority, taboo, ambition and subjects people would often rather keep beneath the surface.

On October 28, retrograde Venus in Libra opposes retrograde Chiron in Aries.

Again we meet the relationship-versus-self theme.

Can you cooperate without disappearing?

Can you love without abandoning yourself?

Can you compromise without quietly resenting the compromise later?

Then on October 30, retrograde Mercury in Scorpio squares Mars in Leo.

Again.

This is the second Mercury–Mars square of October.

The first appeared right at the beginning of the month.

So perhaps that conversation isn't finished.

Perhaps the information changed.

Perhaps somebody finally found the receipt.

Mercury in Scorpio:

“I have evidence.”

Mars in Leo:

“I have a response.”

Everyone else:

“Could this possibly wait until November?”

Apparently not.

And then, beautifully, absurdly, perfectly:

October 31. Halloween.

Mercury retrograde in Scorpio.

Scorpio season.

Venus retrograde.

The Taurus Full Moon still echoing through the week.

If October were ever going to arrive wearing black velvet and carrying a candle through an underground corridor, this would be the year.

THE DEEPER OCTOBER STORY: WHO HAS THE POWER?

Look at the month from beginning to end and a remarkably coherent story emerges.

October begins with Mars opposite Pluto.

It ends shortly after a Full Moon square Pluto.

In between, Pluto stations direct.

Venus retrogrades through Scorpio.

Mercury retrogrades through Scorpio.

The Sun enters Scorpio.

The Taurus–Scorpio axis is illuminated by the Full Moon.

Again and again, the symbolism returns to power.

Political power.

Technological power.

Financial power.

Sexual power.

Information power.

The power of ownership.

The power of desire.

The power we hand to other people.

And the power we regain when we finally understand what has been controlling us.

Perhaps that is October's real question.

Not:

“Am I powerful?”

But:

“Where is my power actually located?”

AND WHAT DOES ALL OF THIS MEAN FOR YOUR CHART?

This is where a general forecast reaches its limit.

You can read about Venus retrograde in Scorpio and understand the collective symbolism. You can know that Mercury is retrograde, Pluto is changing direction and a Full Moon is happening at 2°46′ Taurus.

But your birth chart tells us where it happens to you.

If 8° Scorpio falls in your seventh house, Venus retrograde may speak very differently than if it falls in your second.

If the Taurus Full Moon lands on your Midheaven, it is not the same story as a Full Moon activating your fourth house.

If Mars, Pluto, Mercury or Venus touches one of your natal planets exactly, the general forecast suddenly becomes personal.

Watch what suddenly becomes impossible to ignore.
