The Virgo Purge: New Moon in Virgo 2026 and the Art of Clearing What No Longer Belongs

What happens when a living system needs to survive?

It eliminates what it cannot use.

The body exhales. It sweats. It digests. It removes waste. A forest decomposes what has died and turns it into soil. The Earth releases pressure through movement, fracture and eruption.

And on September 11, the sky gives us a New Moon in Virgo.

Welcome to the purge.

First, the technical anchor: the New Moon is exact on September 11, 2026 at about 03:27 UTC / 05:27 CEST, at 18°25′ Virgo.

And importantly, this is not another eclipse. It is the first ordinary New Moon following the August eclipse sequence.

The August 28 Lunar Eclipse happened at 4°54′ Pisces, opposite the Sun in Virgo, so it activated the Pisces–Virgo axis very clearly. Now, only two weeks later, the Sun and Moon meet in Virgo.

The eclipse dissolved. The Virgo New Moon sorts through what remains.

Pisces released it. Virgo cleans it up.

Virgo symbolism gives us a lot to work with here. Contemporary interpretations emphasize clearing clutter, correcting systems, health and wellness, routines, purification through discernment, organization, work and doing the small practical things that restore order.

The Virgo–Pisces axis: purification through separation vs. dissolution

Pisces and Virgo are opposite signs, but they are dealing with related problems.

Pisces dissolves boundaries. Virgo discriminates.

Pisces says: release it, surrender it, let it flow away. Virgo says: now separate what is useful from what is waste.

What stays? What goes? What is healthy? What has become contaminated? What needs cleaning? What needs repairing?

What needs to be removed so that the organism — whether that's a body, a household, an institution or symbolically the Earth itself — can function better?

That's why I really like the word purging. Not destruction for destruction's sake. More like elimination as part of a functioning system.

The human body does this constantly. We breathe out. We sweat. We urinate. We defecate. Cells die and are replaced. The liver processes substances. The immune system distinguishes what belongs from what doesn't.

That's extremely Virgo symbolically: discern, process, eliminate, repair, repeat.

And after Pisces? The metaphor gets even better.

Water washes something away.

Earth deals with what's left.

“As above, so below”

Volcanoes and earthquakes are already a symbolic mirrors for our geodetic interpretation.

I would not say that the Virgo New Moon is scientifically causing earthquakes or volcanic eruptions. There is no established scientific basis for that causal claim.

And conveniently, we don't need to claim it :)

Because there genuinely is notable geological activity occurring as we speak. Anak Krakatau and 5 other volcanoes in Indonesia have just undergone a major eruption, with the eruption disrupting thousands of flights; AP reported that Anak Krakatau is still producing intermittent eruptions, ash and localized earthquakes afterward.

What happens when the Earth needs to release pressure?

She moves. She cracks. She erupts. She expels. She rearranges.

And astrologically — symbolically, not causally — that is fascinating beside a Virgo New Moon following a Pisces eclipse.

In astrology, we can read the Earth symbolically just as we read the human body: systems build pressure, release what can no longer be contained, reorganize, and begin again.

Then:

As above, so below. As within, so without.

Personally: what are we purging?

This New Moon could therefore become less of a generic “set your intentions!” post and more:

THE VIRGO PURGE.

What needs to leave your body?

What habit needs to leave your routine?

What clutter needs to leave your home?

What obligation needs to leave your calendar?

What information needs to leave your head?

What relationship pattern needs to leave your nervous system?

What broken process needs to leave your workplace?

And perhaps most Virgo of all:

What are you maintaining simply because you've become accustomed to maintaining it?

That's stronger than “manifest something new.”

Before Virgo plants the new system, Virgo clears the workspace.

Collectively / geopolitically

We inspect where the New Moon falls on the angles:

health systems, sanitation, food production, agriculture, labor and workers, logistics, administration, civil service, public infrastructure, maintenance, data, regulation, contamination, waste management, environmental cleanup, disease control, supply chains and the systems that quietly keep societies functioning.

Then Pisces on the opposite side adds themes such as water, flooding, oceans, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, intoxication, contamination, religion/spirituality, migration, dissolution and things that cross boundaries.

That gives us a really rich geopolitical question: What needs to be cleaned, repaired, regulated, separated, processed or removed so that the larger system can function?

Virgo is mutable Earth.

Not Earth as an immovable mountain.

Earth as a living system that must constantly be tended.

Soil has to be replenished. Waste decomposes. Plants die and become nutrients. Bodies return to Earth.

Systems continuously transform material from one state into another.

That gives us something much richer than “Virgo = cleaning.”

It becomes: Purification is not sterility. It is circulation.

Something has to leave for something healthier to grow.

And that connects us beautifully back to the eclipse.

August 28: Pisces Lunar Eclipse — release, culmination, dissolution.

September 11: Virgo New Moon — sort, cleanse, repair, reorganize, reseed.

And then there is one more detail I really like: the current New Moon has supportive relationship with Mars, which gives this otherwise quiet Virgo lunation more willingness to actually implement the improvement, rather than merely identify it.

THE EARTH IS CLEANING HOUSE. SO ARE WE. 🌑🌍

The Pisces eclipse washed something away.
The Virgo New Moon asks us to clean up what remains.

Not everything that leaves our lives is a loss. Some things are waste. Some things are expired. Some systems have stopped working. Some structures need repair. Some habits have completed their purpose.

And sometimes the healthiest thing an organism can do is eliminate what it can no longer use.

THE GEODETIC MAP: WHERE DOES THE VIRGO PURGE LAND?

If astrology describes a moment in time, geodetic astrology asks another question: where on Earth does that moment become especially angular?

For the September 11 New Moon at 18°25′ Virgo, four geographical corridors stand out. Along these paths, the New Moon falls close to one of the four primary angles — the Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven or Imum Coeli.

This does not mean that these places are destined for literal disasters, nor are we suggesting that a New Moon causes earthquakes or volcanic eruptions. Geodetic astrology is a symbolic framework. What interests us is where the themes of this lunation — purification, elimination, health, labor, repair, maintenance, food, systems, infrastructure and the separation of what is useful from what has become waste — become geographically emphasized.

And with Virgo, perhaps the most important question is very simple:

What needs cleaning up?

NEW MOON ON THE IC — WHAT IS HAPPENING UNDERNEATH?

The New Moon falls on the Imum Coeli through a striking Atlantic–West African corridor.

The line runs through the Greenland Sea, east of Iceland, continues down the Atlantic side of Europe near western Ireland and Portugal, and then moves through Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, western Mali, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

The IC is the bottom of the chart.

Roots. Land. Foundations. Home. What lies underneath the visible surface.

In mundane astrology, that immediately makes the Virgo symbolism interesting.

Soil. Agriculture. Water and sanitation. Underground infrastructure. Housing. Food systems. Environmental conditions. Resources beneath the ground. The foundations upon which ordinary life depends.

And psychologically, the IC is what we don't necessarily see.

So this corridor carries a beautiful version of the Virgo question:

What needs to be cleaned from the roots?

Not polished on the surface.

Not rebranded.

Not covered with another coat of paint.

Actually dealt with.

For individuals living close to this line, the symbolism can also turn inward: home, family patterns, living conditions, physical environment and the private systems that support everyday life.

NEW MOON RISING — A NEW CYCLE BECOMES VISIBLE

The Ascendant line creates another enormous corridor, beginning through Russia around Omsk, then moving through Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, western China, Pakistan and India, continuing through central India and toward Sri Lanka.

The Ascendant is emergence.

Something rises.

Something enters visibility.

And because this is a New Moon, I find the symbolism particularly appropriate: a new cycle literally appearing on the eastern horizon.

Virgo rising asks for practical beginnings.

Health. Work. Administration. Agriculture. Skills. Organization. Public services. Logistics. Maintenance.

Not necessarily glamorous subjects — but try running a country without them.

This is perhaps where we watch for new systems, reforms, health or labor discussions, administrative changes, infrastructure projects, agricultural issues or attempts to correct something that isn't functioning efficiently.

And again, Virgo doesn't necessarily arrive with fireworks.

Sometimes the revolution is somebody finally fixing the damn system.

NEW MOON ON THE MC — THE PURGE BECOMES PUBLIC

On the Midheaven, the Virgo New Moon runs through far eastern Russia near the Kamchatka region, crosses the Pacific, then reaches New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Norfolk Island, before continuing toward southern New Zealand around Queenstown.

The Midheaven is the most publicly visible point of the chart.

Government. Leadership. Reputation. Institutions. Authority. Events that become visible from the outside.

So if the IC asks:

What's happening underneath?

The MC asks:

What can no longer be hidden from public view?

With Virgo, this can emphasize the functioning — or malfunctioning — of institutions and systems.

Public health. Environmental management. Infrastructure. Labor. Regulation. Agriculture. Administrative competence.

Essentially:

Is the machine actually working?

And if it isn't, Virgo tends to notice the loose screw.

NEW MOON SETTING — NORTH AMERICA & MEXICO

And then we get perhaps the most populated corridor.

The New Moon falls on the Descendant through central North America, running through Manitoba around Winnipeg, then south across parts of the United States including North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas, before continuing through Mexico — with Mexico City particularly close to the line.

The Descendant is different.

It describes the other.

Partners. Opponents. Agreements. Alliances. Negotiations. Open conflict. The people or countries standing across the table from us.

For mundane astrology, that makes this corridor especially interesting for international relationships, trade, treaties, political negotiations, disputes, borders and relationships between governments or groups.

But remember: this is Virgo.

So the question isn't merely:

Who are we dealing with?

It becomes:

Does this relationship actually work? What needs renegotiating? What isn't efficient anymore? What arrangement requires correction? Who isn't doing their part? What agreement looks fine on paper but fails in practice?

That could become particularly interesting to watch around the central United States and Mexico.

And Mexico City directly under or very close to the Descendant line is absolutely something!

AND THEN THERE IS MOTHER EARTH

Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are literal geological processes caused by tectonics and volcanism — not by a Virgo New Moon.

But astrology has always worked through symbolism.

And symbolically, there is something extraordinary about contemplating a mutable Earth New Moon through the image of a planet that is itself constantly processing material.

The Earth isn't static. Pressure accumulates. Rock melts. Plates move. Material rises. Mountains erode. Organic matter decomposes.

Old material becomes the raw material for something new.

The Earth processes. And Virgo understands processing.

Perhaps that's the deeper meaning of the word detox here.

Not some Instagram wellness fantasy in which we drink green juice for three days and become spiritually superior. 😂

Real purification is messy. Something has to be broken down. Something has to be separated. Something has to leave. Something has to become useful again.

And that brings us directly back to the Virgo–Pisces axis.

PISCES RELEASED IT. VIRGO CLEANS IT UP.

The August 28 Lunar Eclipse in Pisces opened the process through the opposite end of this axis.

Pisces dissolves. Virgo discriminates.

Pisces releases. Virgo processes.

Pisces says: Let it go. Virgo looks at the resulting mess and says: Fine. But who's cleaning this up?

The September 11 New Moon is our answer. Not another dramatic eclipse. Not necessarily another enormous revelation.

Something much less glamorous and perhaps much more useful: Now we do the work. Clean the room. Clear the body. Fix the system. Remove what has expired. Repair what can still be repaired. Stop feeding what isn't functioning. And create enough empty space for the next cycle to begin.

As above, so below.
As within, so without.
